A Church for you!
There are many ways of describing the Linwood Avenue Union Church. People are friendly and caring. We are welcoming. We are accepting and supportive. We are an all age church. We have people in every age group. We’re proud of our ‘oldies’ and our youth, and celebrate camaraderie within an inter-generational church.
We are a community church. We belong here. We’ve been in the Bromley – Linwood – Woolston community for nearly 150 years. We are here for the people.
Our worship is a mixture of traditional and contemporary, formality and informality. We sing good old hymns and great new songs.
The church is very relaxed – but you’ll find we are also very committed to following and serving God, everywhere and every day.
We are a multi-cultural and diverse church. We want everyone to feel at home. Our emphasis is on being a community of faith rather than a community where everybody agrees on everything.
We are a lively church. Lots of groups and activities – organised and spontaneous. We’re busy.
We are outward looking. Especially through the Linwood Avenue Community Corner Trust we seek to meet the needs of the community – assisting people to become fully independent. The trust employs a family/community worker and two partnership community workers in the health sector.
Beyond the parish we support ministries in Christchurch (such as chaplaincies), nationwide (usually through our denominations) and globally – missions, and ministries such as Christian World Service which seeks to lift standards of living for those most in need.
Above all, we’re just people like you, trying to follow the teaching of Christ to love God, yourself and others.
To get to know us you really need to meet us. Come along!
During the week our facilities are used by a number of different community groups such as: Gentle Exercise Class on Tuesdays, Tai Chi Wednesday and Friday mornings and Music and Movement on Thursday mornings. We have a large hall for hire and a two lounge rooms. If you are interested in hiring any of our facilities please call the office on 389-5303 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT
Linwood Avenue Union Church, in response to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, is in the process of building a loving, caring, community of faith. This faith in Jesus Christ as Son of God and Saviour, who promised his presence for daily living through the power of the Holy Spirit, is for sharing. With this is mind, we are a welcoming Church, encouraging all people to gain a sense of belonging, as they come to express their faith in God.
Acknowledging the giftedness of the whole people of God, together, we will support, encourage, and challenge one another in our faith as we each go as servants in the world to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We seek to dialogue with the community in which we live, in order to listen and respond in love. We will work towards justice, peace, and an ecologically based community for everyone.
We will work towards multi-cultural harmony, as first expressed in partnership between Maori and Pakeha in the Treaty of Waitangi, and with all other cultures that make up Aotearoa New Zealand.
We will seek to grapple with issues of social, moral, and ethical concerns within the community, giving Christian impetus to these issues, and being prepared to take action against issues leading to poverty and oppression.
